Solid propellant boosters are not controllable and must generally burn until exhaustion after ignition, unlike liquid propellant or cold-gas propulsion systems. However, launch abort systems and range safety destruct systems can attempt to cut off propellant flow by using shaped charges . [9] As of 1986 [update] estimates for SRB failure rates have ranged from 1 in 1,000 to 1 in 100,000. [10] SRB assemblies have failed suddenly and catastrophically. Nozzle blocking or deformation can lead to overpressure or a reduction in thrust, while defects in the booster's casing or stage couplings can cause the assembly to break apart by increasing aerodynamic stresses. Additional failure modes include bore choking and combustion instability. [11] Failure of an O-ring seal on the Space Shuttle Challenger 's right solid rocket booster led to its disintegration shortly after liftoff.

On March 28, 2012, a team funded by Jeff Bezos , founder of , reported that they had located the F-1 rocket engines from an Apollo mission using sonar equipment. [20] Bezos stated he planned to raise at least one of the engines, which rest at a depth of 14,000 feet (4,300 m), about 400 miles (640 km) east of Cape Canaveral, Florida. However, the condition of the engines, which have been submerged for more than 40 years, was unknown. [21] NASA Administrator Charles Bolden released a statement congratulating Bezos and his team for their find and wished them success. He also affirmed NASA's position that any recovered artifacts would remain property of the agency, but that they would likely be offered to the Smithsonian Institution and other museums, depending on the number recovered. Hi there!
Thanks Tim for all the info and your navigable and well-maintained site with Q&A/feedback; much appreciated! I just invested in the Trangia Multifuel X2 and I intend to buy ethanol (etanol or etylalkohol as they call it here in Sweden) as back-up for it. I would like to have this on hand in case we have a power outage in the winter and need to use it inside the house or in a not completely well-ventilated area. I have read that this is the safest fuel in non ideally-ventilated places and that it even gives off a little heat in a pinch. Do you have any reflections on this? And any advice when switching between fuel sources, . do you need to rinse out the canister? Thanks in advance!
All the best,
Lindy
